Ballito Dolphins Rugby – a season to look forward too

We are well and truly underway in 2018 and the season is nearly upon us! Our seniors have been hard at work with their pre-season and this year we welcome Jacques Visagie to our coaching team. He joins Craig Dawson our Director of rugby and Andrew Steel our backline specialist. We also welcome back a couple of players who plied their trade for various premiership clubs in Durban last season and even a couple of lads from England. As well as our old faithful from last year. The senior squad comprises around 50 players and for the first time, this has our coaching team scratching their heads in terms of selection. (Good Thing!)

The start of the pre-season was way back in early January with a few of the lads looking distinctly like the rest of their families didn’t get their fair share of the Xmas feast! But nothing gets past our coaches and a rigorous campaign now has them in show room condition! (Although it must be said some of our fellows do have considerable mileage Lol) We also welcome on board Robsons Breweries who are located at the Market in Lifestyle we are delighted to be associated with such a fine brand. (Adult hydration being of utmost importance to us!) Pre-season games saw an adventure down the South Coast to compete in the South Coast 7’s which brought back the Shield and then last weekend a trip up the N2 to the Bozas Cup in Eshowe. Where we entered two full 15 man teams, both competing in the top division of the event. The 2nds lost two narrowly and held a former premier league team to a draw, a commendable effort seeing they were batting in a league above themselves. The 1st team reached the final unbeaten and after extra time eventually capitulated to Drakensberg. A massive team who dominate their inland league. Although the writer doesn’t claim to be unbiased we actually scored a perfectly valid try in normal time which would have seen us victorious! All of this bodes really well for the upcoming season! Be sure to be at our first game at Sugar Rush on the 17th March!!

The juniors are also in full swing with practices every Friday night from 5pm onwards. The first Junior tournament is scheduled for the 15th of April at South Coast Warriors and then each Sunday with a break for Easter but the entire fixture list isn’t confirmed as yet. Friday nights at the field are a perfect opportunity to watch the sun set, have a quiet one or two whilst your son enjoys running around with his mates all in an environment of great coaching and all round fun!

Our Colts age groups (U12-18) will start practicing in the not to distant future. Their playing season is in the 3rd school term so it doesn’t clash with the school rugby season. Also please be aware that a provincial team (with colours being awarded) is selected to compete in an Inter Provincial Tournament at the end of the season.

Then our ladies have been more than active and have formed a ladies hockey team. What started out as 5 girls is now nearly 30 strong with aspirations of joining the Durban League! Practicing on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings alongside our senior rugby lads.

As if that isn’t enough to get the year going a soccer section has also been launched this past Sunday. At this stage it is primarily for kids but you never know at this rate we just have a senior team soon. Please visit our website for more details.

We have also been offered free membership of the Dolphin Coast 911 App with our page listed under “Local Activities”. This provides a quick ling to our website and Facebook pages but more importantly has an Emergency Alert feature which informs IPSS of any medical incident at any of our practices with free evacuation to the nearest medical facility. This is DOES NOT cover any treatment once admitted to hospital.
